It’s the summer of 1889, and Amelia van den Broek is new to Baltimore and eager to take in all the pleasures the city has to offer. But her gaiety is interrupted by disturbing, dreamlike visions she has only at sunset—visions that offer glimpses of the future. Soon, friends and strangers alike call on Amelia to hear her prophecies. However, a forbidden romance with Nathaniel, an artist, threatens the new life Amelia is building in Baltimore. This enigmatic young man is keeping secrets of his own—still, Amelia finds herself irrepressibly drawn to him.
When one of her darkest visions comes to pass, Amelia’s world is thrown into chaos. And those around her begin to wonder if she’s not the seer of dark portents, but the cause.
The Vespertine is story of Amelia, who is sent to Baltimore to find a husband and a future. She meets and falls in love with Nathaniel, poor and completely unsuitable painter to find a husband in.Soon after her arrival, Amelia starts seeing visions of future at sunset. The ability to see the future makes her famous but it also becomes a reason for her ruination.
What i like the most about the book is the setting.1889, Baltimore, a middle class girl trying to learn etiquettes of the society to be accepted as a part of it, fall in love with a guy with no future, vespers(visions of the future), fame and then a completely ruined heroine.
The book start with Amelia completely ruined and locked in a room by her brother and close to mental breakdown. And then book switches between Amelia’s days in Baltimore and present. It took me few pages to completely sink in the switch but then i started enjoying it.And i do appreciate the switch as it did work a bit for me.
In Baltimore, Zora,Amelia’s cousin, is a friend and a mentor to Amelia. She is all girl and Amelia’s guide to be one.The only developed characters in the book for me are Zora and Amelia. But they are not quite justified.I liked the bond developed between them.Amelia’s struggle with her good and bad side adds to the strength of the book.
Nathaniel and relationship between Amelia and Nathaniel are not really well developed.I could not feel the love between them develop.
Nathaniel also possesses paranormal capability. But there is hardly any use and description of this element.Frankly speaking, it did not make much sense to me.
The books starts slow and ends abruptly. And that is the reason why i think the characters and the story did not get enough time and space to develop.
Though there are flaws and loopholes in the book, I would recommend it for the good parts which are very strong and fun.
Also the book stands high for me on literary grounds.I enjoyed the prose and writing style of Saundra Mitchell.
She is definitely a must read author for me now.
