The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming. . . .

This monster, though, is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.  It wants the truth.

Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final story idea of Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do.

Connor O’Malley is a troubled thirteen something boy and he is not having a time of his life. He dreams of monster. He is bullied at school. He does not like his grandmother and her visits. And… and his mom has cancer..and cancer treatments that leave him exhausted.

And one midnight from nowhere, he hears someone calling his name. He sees a green monster coming from yew tree call his name. The monster tells that he will be telling him three stories and in return Connor will have to tell the fourth story. And that would be his true story.

Everyone on the blogosphere said that this book shattered them. They also said ”Hey please keep your box of tissues ready”. But this book broke my heart. It made me sleepless. It made me sad.  A story which deals with loss when so powerfully written will make you laugh and cry and happy and sad at same time.

The stories which monster tells to Connor are simple and complex at same time. They are ambiguous and open to interpretation. The stories very cleverly show us gray shades of life along with life’s blacks and whites.

And Connor’s story, his true story, gives you a hard punch in your stomach. And that .. that truth is going to make you sleepless. That truth is what you need tissues for.

A Monster Calls is beautiful storytelling that is going to stay with you through out your life. This is why you read and this book is why you will keep reading stories. It is a triumph of story of humanity. It is a story that will keep you hopeful.

After all

Stories are the wildest things of all
