Today,I have Michelle Hamilton , author of World of Samar Series with me on the blog. She will talk about her inspiration to write World of Samar.
Please give a warm welcome to Michelle.
The Star of Eldon is the third book in the World of Samar series. I began writing this series in high school on an old electric typewriter with a white correction ribbon. I can still remember getting into the story and typing so fast, the keys jammed together at the ribbon and tore holes in the paper.
The idea for the first book, Emerald, came from the rock band Styx and their Kilroy Was Here album. I played that album obsessively as a teen and the story just came to me while listening to it. Kilroy Was Here wasStyx’s response to the hysteria in the media during the 1980s. The Moral Majority believed certain rock bands were putting satanic messages on records and listeners would be able to receive the message by playing the records backwards. The premise of this album, and so many during that time, was that adults were trying to control the minds of children by denying them their musical expression. I was fascinated with the idea of mind control and secretly hoped I would develop telepathic powers, so I could do the controlling. Unfortunately that didn’t work out for me, but I could do one better. I could write about a race of people who had that ability, hence the birth of the Stravad.
The character of Kai, from Emerald, developed from my love of Shakespeare. After reading Hamlet, I became intrigued with the idea of a reluctant hero and wanted to create my own, but when it came to Talar, one of the main characters in Star, I feel like I perfected it. He is the epitome of the reluctant hero. His complexity makes him one of my favorite characters – his past, his legacy, and his personality all make for a very intriguing leading man.
